Posted June 2024
Welcome, fellow witches, wizards, and even muggles, to the heart of the Wizarding World - London! If you fell in love with J.K. Rowling’s world of witches and wizards, then a Harry Potter-themed vacation must be added to your bucket list. Follow in the footsteps of the Boy Who Lived and his magical friends and join us as we explore the top filming locations from the Harry Potter series in this famous city.
1. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter
Your journey begins at the renowned Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, an absolute must for any Harry Potter fan. Here, you’ll be transported behind the scenes of the films, uncovering the secrets of Hogwarts Castle, Diagon Alley, and the Forbidden Forest. Witness the stunning Great Hall, wander through the Gryffindor Common Room, and see the intricate details of the magical props and costumes. An immersive experience awaits, where you’ll truly feel like you’ve stepped into the Wizarding World.
2. Leadenhall Market - Diagon Alley
Step into another real-life inspiration of Diagon Alley at Leadenhall Market, the magical shopping district. With its cobblestone streets and ornate Victorian architecture, you’ll be transported to a bustling world of wizarding shops. Look out for the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron and let your imagination soar as you imagine browsing for spell books and potions ingredients.
3. Millennium Bridge - The Destruction of the Bridge (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)
Take a stroll across the Millennium Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge that plays a small but pivotal role in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Recall the dramatic scene where the Death Eaters wreak havoc on the bridge, casting spells and causing chaos. The real-life bridge offers stunning views of the Thames River and St. Paul’s Cathedral, making it a perfect spot for a memorable photo.
4. Westminster Tube Station - Ministry of Magic (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
Descend into the depths of Westminster Tube Station to experience the surroundings that inspired the magical entrances to the Ministry of Magic. While there’s no actual entrance to the Ministry, the filmmakers did shut down the entire station for a day of filming. Being one of London’s busiest stations, the closure of this bustling hub for the filming of Harry Potter caused quite a stir in the city, with thousands of travelers experiencing disruptions. The rumored cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars to close the station for the day adds to the magnitude of this event. Despite its small appearance in the film, people value the authenticity of being in the real tube station, appreciating the genuine connection it brings to the magical world of Harry Potter.
5. Claremont Square - Grimmauld Place (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)
For Harry Potter fans, Claremont Square holds a special significance as one of the filming locations for the movies. The square served as the exterior of Grimmauld Place, the ancestral home of the Black family and the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. The iconic number twelve, Grimmauld Place, was located in this charming square. Although not as imposing as the fictional address, Claremont Square is a pleasant spot to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the greenery. Its historical charm and connection to the wizarding world make it a hidden gem for those exploring London’s Harry Potter filming locations.
6. Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue - The Leaky Cauldron and the Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes
As you explore Piccadilly Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue, envision the bustling London streets where wizards and witches shopped at the vibrant Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes and sought refuge at The Leaky Cauldron. Let your imagination run wild as you recreate scenes from “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” You will also find the Palace Theatre, home of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, between Charing Cross Road and Shaftesbury Ave.
7. Lambeth Bridge - The Knight Bus (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
Hop aboard the Knight Bus at Lambeth Bridge, located in the heart of London, where the three-decker purple bus navigated through the bustling London streets and over the Thames River. Relive the comical scene when Harry hailed the Knight Bus in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and head out on your own magical adventure. Connecting the boroughs of Westminster and Lambeth, the bridge offers stunning views of the city’s skyline and famous landmarks such as the House of Parliament and the London Eye.
8. Australia House - Gringotts Wizarding Bank
Australia House is an impressive building located in London, England. It serves as the official diplomatic mission of Australia in the United Kingdom. Apart from its diplomatic function, Australia House has also gained recognition among Harry Potter fans. In the film “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (also known as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in the US), the interior of Australia House was used to portray Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The magnificent marble banking hall was the setting for the memorable scene where Harry, Hermione, and Ron visit Gringotts to retrieve the Philosopher’s Stone.
9. King’s Cross Station - Platform 9¾
Next stop, King’s Cross Station - the gateway to the Hogwarts Express! The attraction is a recreation of the iconic scene from the Harry Potter series, where Hogwarts students run through the brick wall between platforms 9 and 10 to access the hidden platform where the Hogwarts Express departs. At King’s Cross Station, a trolley is embedded in the wall with a sign marking Platform 9¾, creating a fun photo opportunity for visitors to create the illusion of running through the wall. Tourists and fans can dress in wizarding robes and scarves, just like the characters in the movies, and pose with the trolley, making it appear as though they are about to catch the Hogwarts Express.
10. St. Pancras International Station - The Magical Portal (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)
Finally, make your way to St. Pancras International Station, which
serves as a historic and iconic railway station in London. It serves as a major transportation hub for both domestic and international travel. For Harry Potter fans, St. Pancras Station holds a significant connection as a filming location for the movies. The station’s stunning Victorian Gothic architecture made it the perfect setting for several memorable scenes in the series.
In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the exterior of St Pancras Station was used as the filming location for the fictitious King’s Cross Station, where Harry and Ron use the Flying Car to follow the Hogwarts Express. Additionally, the station’s beautiful interior was featured in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” as the filming location for the dramatic scene where Harry and Dumbledore use the Floo Network to travel to Budleigh Babberton.
