The seven most common flavors in food are: sweet, bitter, sour, salty, meaty (umami), cool, and hot. These flavors are the ones most commonly experienced on our tongues when we eat something. What an amazing thing that there are seven continents for us to try these different flavors. We’ve explored the world to find where each flavor shines on each continent. If you are looking to travel the world Anthony Bourdain style, this list is for you!
Sweet: Smooth flan, sponge cake with peaches, refreshing papaya cream, there is no better way to explore South America than through its desserts. Ancient history foodies will love exploring Peru through its many sweet treats. Peru has influences from its indigenous people, the colonial era, Africa, and Asia.
Bitter: Bitter flavors can balance out a heartier dish. Bitter foods include arugula, chocolate, eggplant, and saffron. Europe is the place to go for these flavors. Greece is the all-star for dishes like Moussaka, a dish with ground meat, wine, potato, and eggplant, and baklava, a dessert that balances the bite of pistachio with sweet syrup.
Sour: At first, the idea of eating something sour may not appeal to you. When we think of sour including something like vinegar, more doors open. Pickled cucumbers and beets, kimchi, and citrus all are considered sour. Asia uses sour flavors in so many amazing ways. Soup lovers should consider traveling to Russia for their Rassolnik. This soup is made from pickled cucumbers, barley, and meat. It can be dated back to the 15th century, making this dish a historical must try!
Salty: North America is full of amazing dishes that use salty flavors well. Consider traveling to Quebec to try poutine in its place of creation. Poutine is a combination of french fries, gravy, and squeaky cheese curds. Stay for their Winter Festival or explore the rich culture during milder months.
Umami: Travelers looking for Umami or meaty flavored dishes should look no further than Australia, home of Vegemite, a popular savory, yeast-based spread. Australia is also known for their amazing steaks and mushroom-heavy dishes. If you are looking for a place with great food and entertainment, Sydney can’t be beat.
Cool: Anyone looking to really stretch their exploration can stay in semi-permanent settlements in Antarctica. Tourists and scientists alike are welcome on the continent. Common foods are fish, muesli, chocolate, and vegetables grown in hydroponic houses.
Hot: Northern Africa is so great at spice there is one named after one of their indigenous people. Berber spice is a beautiful blend of heat and spice, using cumin, coriander, cardamon, fenugreek, and more. It is commonly used in dishes like Doro Wat— a flavorful stewed chicken and boiled egg dish served with sourdough-like flat bread.
We are all connected. How amazing it is that our seven flavor senses line up with the seven continents. Wherever you travel next, pack your appetite and sense of adventure with you.
